Level 4 – Funeral Celebrancy
Course Content

The course is organised into
9 sections which are:

Advanced Writing Skills
This section will provide you with so many new ways of lifting your writing to a new level.

Includes: Storytelling and rhetorical techniques, punctuation, structuring a tribute, opening and closing techniques, writing when there is little information, different writing styles, and writing techniques. This section has accompanying audio files.

Bereavement Interviews in Challenging Circumstances
This section will give you a new toolkit and increased knowledge around difficult deaths and challenging family circumstances.

Includes: How to understand and deal with difficult circumstances such as anger and emotion, when the death has been from drug and alcohol causes, when the body has not been recovered and the effect of inquests.

Advanced Delivery Skills
All celebrants can learn to improve their deliveries in some way, and this section will noticeably improve your delivery skills.

Includes: Techniques to improve your verbal and non-verbal delivery, including; breathing, diction, articulation, clarity, dynamics of the voice, body language, movement, gestures, posture, using items, space and distance, facial expressions, eye contact, using symbolic actions, using amplification equipment. A one hour 1:1 Zoom session with a voice coach is included.

Child and Baby Funerals
This section will give you the confidence to work with bereaved parents to create and deliver child and baby funerals.

Includes: Understanding the context of child and baby funerals, surrounding factors, family circumstances, grief theories, death statistics, legal issues, funeral industry procedures, signposting for parents, scattering and memorial ceremonies for babies and children, planning the funeral, meeting the parents, creating the funeral, content and choices. Two Zoom sessions on working with bereaved parents and creating and delivering child and baby funerals are included.

Inclusivity for Funerals
This section will provide you with a fully comprehensive toolkit to make funerals more inclusive for those with additional needs and requirements.

Includes: Understanding terminology, understanding a wide range of mental health conditions, learning difficulties and physical disabilities and strategies for improving the funeral experience for people arranging and/or attending funerals, gender and sexual orientation, inclusive language and wording, strategies for children attending funerals.

Advanced Scattering of Ashes
Celebrants are being increasingly asked to deliver these ceremonies and this section includes ways of making this final ceremony more personal and meaningful.

Includes: Locations for ashes ceremonies, environmental issues around ash disposal, equipment and methods for scattering ashes and planning ashes ceremonies.

Advaned Memorial Ceremonies

Memorial Ceremonies are now arranged for many reasons and this ceremony can be beneficial for a bereaved family, especially following a direct cremation.

Includes: The purpose of a memorial ceremony, planning a memorial ceremony with the family, creating an order of ceremony and script, delivering ashes and memorial ceremonies.

Advanced Poetry and Readings
This section will give you an in-depth understanding of all types of poetry and readings and how to improve your delivery, with lots of examples of course!

Includes: Poetry forms and structure, poetic devices, understanding poetic language, how poetry enhances a funeral ceremony, vocal and non-verbal delivery techniques, call and
response pieces.

Advanced Music for Funerals
This section will provide you with an understanding of the impact of music at funerals and how to use it to the very best effect.

Includes: Positioning music within a funeral ceremony, including live music and singing, music technology at a crematorium and at outdoor funeral ceremonies, webcasting and using visual tributes in a funeral.

        IT Skills you will need both during your training and working as a celebrant

        Do you have the following skills:

        1. Ability in creating, naming, using, saving and retrieving files and folders.
        2. Familiarity with using your version of Word (or similar software).
        3. Understanding of toolbars and icons.
        4. Ability to copy and paste sections of text.
        5. An understanding of ‘track changes’ and how to use this function.
        6. Ability to bold, underline and italicise text.
        7. Be able to change font type, size and colour.
        8. Ability to centre text in the middle of a page and right and left justify it.
        9. Be able to alter line spacing in a document and insert a page break.
        10. Be able to use the undo and redo functions.
        11. Understand how the tab key works.
        12. Ability to use headers and footers, bullet points and numbering
        13. Understanding of the difference between ‘Save’ and ‘Save As’.

        If you said ‘yes’ to all of the above then you have good basic skills.

        If you have answered ‘no’ to any of the above then you will need to improve your basic skills before starting the course. This can be done in a few hours by using one or more of the free online tutorials available on the internet.
