The Advanced Learner Loan is a government-funded loan to help learners. It's easy to apply for, doesn’t take your household income into account and doesn’t involve a credit check.

Here are some key facts about the loan:

•Repayments are linked to what you earn and not how much you borrowed.

•You only have to start making repayments until the April following the end of your course and you’re earning over £21,000 a year (which is £404 a week or £1,750 a month). (This figure increases to £25,000 on 6th April 2018.) Until then you don’t need to pay back anything, but you can make voluntary repayments at any time.

•You pay 9% of the money you earn over £21,000 (or £25,000), before tax. For example, if you earn £22,000 a year, your monthly repayment will be £7 a month; and if you earn £35,000 a year, it will be £105 per month.

•Interest is charged on a sliding scale between the Retail Price Index (RPI) and RPI +3%, depending on how much you earn.

Loans are not means tested (or subject to credit checks) and current employment status is not considered. Partial loans are also available. You can take out up to 4 Advanced Learner Loans and can therefore apply for both the Funeral Celebrancy Diploma and the Naming & Couples Celebrancy Diploma.

England & Wales: Enterprise Allowance

The government’s ‘Enterprise Allowance’ often provides full funding for those wishing to take this qualification. It all depends on your personal circumstances and is often applicable to those who have been or are being made redundant.

You need to contact your local Job Centre Plus about the scheme and they will decide whether to put forward an application to fund you. If they do, then we are contacted and receive the funding directly. Tell your Job Centre Plus that Civil Ceremonies Ltd is the learning provider you are looking to train with. Before you contact them, call us for more information that you can take with you.

Professional and Career Development Loan

A Professional and Career Development Loan is a deferred repayment bank loan set at a competitive fixed interest rate that can be used to support your learning.

You can borrow any amount between £300 and £10,000 from participating banks (currently The Co-operative and Barclays) and use it to fund your training. Like any loan, you need to repay the money you borrow but with a Professional and Career Development Loan the Learning and Skills Council (LSC) will pay the interest on the loan while you are learning (in our case this starts with your Distance Learning Package and goes through to the time that you finish the residential training) and for up to one month afterwards.
