Who is the course for?
This course is designed for registration staff who will be registering deaths for the first time,
or who have registered before, but seek to improve their knowledge, skill and understanding of this area of registration.
What we expect you to gain:
At the end of the course delegates will be able to:
- Describe the correct registration process for the majority of situations
- Employ relevant questioning skills to take a death registration, and what checks need to be made to ensure the death can be registered
- Recognise and complete relevant forms for the variety of death registration situations
- Recognise when additional information and help should be sought to ensure a death is not registered incorrectly
This course is designed so that delegates with no previous death registration experience would be able to take registrations after a few days of local supervision and familiarisation with RON.
Delegates will usually be trained in manual registrations, unless local training versions of RON are available.
Course content includes:
- Qualified informants
- Medical certificates
- The Coroner
- The Draft and Register entries
- Incomplete, late or incorrect registrations
- Registrars duties following a registration
- Dealing with situation such as inquests etc
- Declarations
- Corrections

Duration: 3–4 days non-residential
Depending on background and experience
Location: This course is held to meet the requirements of Local Authorities,
and is often held at a Local Authority venue. Hosting authority to provide refreshments and lunch.
